What is Naphthalene?

Naphthalene is a colorless, lustrous crystalline flake. It is insoluble in water, readily sublimes, can volatilize with steam, and has a distinctive odor. As the most important fused-ring aromatic hydrocarbon in industry, it is used for producing phthalic anhydride, intermediates for dyes, rubber additives, and insecticides.

Depending on its purity, naphthalene can be classified into industrial-grade naphthalene and refined naphthalene. The purity of industrial grade naphthalene is generally around 96%. Further purification to remove impurities and sulfur from industrial grade naphthalene yields high purity refined naphthalene.

Uses and Applications of Naphthalene

The main uses of naphthalene are catalytic oxidation to produce phthalic anhydride and synthesis of dye intermediates, production of β - naphthol and H-acid, and also widely used in the production of cement water reducers.

Naphthalene oxidation can produce naphthoquinone, while naphthalene sulfonation can produce naphthols, azo dyes, and dispersants. Tetrahydronaphthalene and decahydronaphthalene obtained from naphthalene aeration are excellent solvents. Alkyl naphthalene, 2,6-dialkylnaphthalene, etc. can be produced through alkylation. Among them, 2,6-diisopropylnaphthalene is an important polymer monomer for the production of 2,6-naphthalic acid, and nonyl naphthalene can be used as a lubricant additive after sulfonation; The halogenated compounds of naphthalene can be used as dispersants and wood preservatives; Alpha naphthylacetic acid is a plant production regulator.

Molecules based on naphthalene, such as naphthone and terbinafine, also have pharmacological effects. Their planar structure and conjugated π - electron system make them highly sought after in the fields of organic electronics and optoelectronics. In materials science, naphthalene based bicyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are high-quality raw materials for preparing intermediate phase precursors of highly oriented carbon materials.

Production of Naphthalene

Tar Naphthalene

Naphthalene separated from coal tar is referred to as tar naphthalene. In high-temperature coal tar, naphthalene accounts for approximately 8–12%. The naphthalene oil fraction within the temperature range of 210–230°C is extracted from the side stream of the tar distillation column. After washing for phenol removal and further distillation to separate light components, industrial naphthalene with a solidification point of 78°C and a purity of about 96% is obtained.

Industrial naphthalene contains impurities such as benzothiophene (1–3%), methylnaphthalene (1–2%), along with small amounts of indene, tar bases, and tar acids. Through further acid washing and distillation, refined naphthalene with a sulfur content of less than 0.1% and a solidification point of 79°C can be produced. If further refining is required to reduce sulfur content below 0.05%, a hydrorefining process must be employed.

Petroleum-derived naphthalene

The raw material for petroleum naphthalene comes from heavy aromatic components in processes such as catalytic reforming, catalytic cracking, and hydrocarbon pyrolysis. In catalytic reformate, the content of methylnaphthalene is about 55%.

First, through extraction and adsorption, various homologues of naphthalene are separated from the feedstock fraction. Then, using catalytic hydrodealkylation with Cr₂O₃-Al₂O₃ as the catalyst, hydrodemethylation is carried out at 400–800°C and 0.5–7 MPa. The reaction products are cooled to condense gaseous substances, followed by distillation to remove light components such as benzene, toluene, and xylene. Finally, further distillation yields petroleum naphthalene. The product is purified through solvent absorption and washing, achieving a purity of up to 99.73%.
