What is Sodium Benzoate?

Sodium benzoate, EINECS number E211, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C4H5NaO2 (or C6H5CO2Na). It has a slightly sweet taste, is odorless or has a faint benzoin scent, and looks like white granules or crystalline powder. It is benzoic acid's sodium salt. It is soluble in ethanol, stable in air, and easily soluble in water with a pH of 8.

Sodium benzoate is a highly effective acidic preservative in acidic environments. It is a popular food preservative that is used all over the world to prolong shelf life and prevent spoiling and acidification.

Uses and Applications

1. The preservation of food

Highly acidic fruits, berries, fruit juices, jams, beverage syrups, and other acidic foods are frequently preserved with sodium benzoate, which can be used in tandem with low-temperature sterilization techniques to enhance one another.

2. Pharmaceutical Industry

Sodium benzoate is also frequently used as a preservative in the pharmaceutical industry, primarily in liquid drug formulations to guarantee drug stability and avoid microbial contamination.

3. Products for personal care

In cosmetics and personal hygiene products, sodium benzoate is frequently used as a preservative:

Toner and makeup should be kept clean to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria.

Avoid microbial contamination when using mouthwash, shampoo, and face cleanser.

4. Industrial uses

Sodium benzoate is used in the industrial sector as a rust inhibitor, lubricant additive, and corrosion inhibitor.

5. Animal health and feed

Antibiotics are substituted with sodium benzoate in animal feed, particularly in pig feed.

6. Field of water treatment

To purify water, sodium benzoate can precipitate heavy metal ions and colloidal particles in wastewater by forming chelate complexes with them. Additionally, it serves as a buffer to control the pH of wastewater.

Methods of Manufacturing

1. Obtained by neutralizing benzoic acid with sodium bicarbonate.

Add water and sodium bicarbonate to the neutralization kettle, and heat to boiling to dissolve the sodium bicarbonate. Under stirring, add benzoic acid until the reaction mixture reaches pH 7.0–7.5. Heat to allow the carbon dioxide to escape, then decolorize with activated carbon for half an hour. Perform suction filtration; concentrate the filtrate and slowly pour it into the liquid pan of the flaker. Drum-dry to form flakes, then crush to obtain sodium benzoate. Consumption quotas: benzoic acid (99.5%) 1045 kg/t, sodium bicarbonate (98%) 610 kg/t.

2. In the neutralization kettle, neutralize benzoic acid to pH 7.5 using a 32% soda ash (sodium carbonate) solution, maintaining the neutralization temperature at 70°C. Decolorize the neutralized liquor with 0.3% activated carbon, then subject it to vacuum suction filtration. The filtrate is concentrated and dried to produce powdered sodium benzoate.

C₆H₅COOH + Na₂CO₃ → C₆H₅COONa

3. Sodium benzoate is obtained by reacting benzoic acid produced from toluene oxidation with sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate, or sodium hydroxide.
