Process Technology
Formic acid is an organic acid. In industrial production, it is mainly synthesized by the following two processes:
1. Methyl Formate Method
Also known as the methanol carbonylation-hydrolysis method, this process involves reacting methanol and carbon monoxide in the presence of a sodium methoxide catalyst to produce methyl formate. The methyl formate is then hydrolyzed to yield formic acid and methanol. The methanol can be recycled back into the methyl formate reactor, while the formic acid undergoes rectification to produce products of various specifications.
This method features high raw material utilization, minimal by-products, and better environmental performance. It also offers high production efficiency, making it well-suited for large-scale industrial manufacturing.
2. Sodium Formate Method
This is a more traditional process in which carbon monoxide reacts with sodium hydroxide to produce sodium formate. The sodium formate is then converted into formic acid through either electrolysis or chemical reduction using reducing agents. However, this method has several drawbacks, including high energy consumption, numerous by-products, and a significant environmental impact, particularly due to residual sulfates, which can substantially affect product purity.
The main reason our formic acid products are widely used in organic synthesis, the pharmaceutical industry, and as additives for crops and animal feed is that we adopt the globally mainstream methyl formate hydrolysis process. This approach enables us to offer formic acid products in a variety of specifications and purity levels, including 85%, 90%, and 99%, while ensuring excellent purity and meeting strict quality standards. For specific details and verification of product quality, please refer to the accompanying Certificate of Analysis (COA).
Uses and Applications
Chemical Industry: Used as a reducing agent and solvent in organic synthesis reactions; used in the synthesis of compounds such as formates and formamides; suitable for the production of coatings, adhesives, plasticizers, and other products; and can also be used as a rubber coagulant.
Pharmaceutical Industry: Used as a pharmaceutical synthesis intermediate in the preparation of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and other medications; also used in the purification and separation of pharmaceutical intermediates.
Agricultural Industry: Used as a preservative for crops and animal feed, extending the shelf life of agricultural products and feed; also used as a raw material for insecticides to control certain agricultural pests.
Other Fields: In the leather tanning process, our 85% Formic Acid acts as an efficient pickling agent. It ensures homogenous acid penetration into the pelts without damaging the collagen fibers, resulting in a smoother leather texture. Used as a dyeing auxiliary to improve dyeing results and as a common chemical reagent in laboratories.
