Aspartame (CAS 22839-47-0, E951) is a high-intensity, low-calorie sweetener widely used in food, beverage and nutrition applications. It is the methyl ester of L-aspartyl-L-phenylalanine and is approximately 200 times sweeter than sucrose, allowing very small quantities to provide a strong sweetening effect.

Testing note: Assay is reported on a dry basis. Diketopiperazine and other related substances are controlled according to the stated limits. Heavy metals, lead and arsenic in the representative batch were below the specified limits.

Beverages

Aspartame is widely used in diet and reduced-sugar carbonated soft drinks, flavored waters, juice drinks and iced teas.

Granular grades may be preferred for beverage production where reduced dust and easier handling are important. Aspartame is most suitable for mildly acidic beverage systems, but actual stability depends on pH, temperature, processing time and storage conditions.

For commercial formulations, stability should be evaluated under the customer's specific processing and storage conditions.

Foods

Aspartame is used in sugar-free and reduced-sugar products such as candied fruit, chewing gum, confectionery, tabletop sweeteners and selected dairy-based desserts.

Powder grades are suitable for dry blending and applications where fine particle distribution is required.

Nutrition & Pharmaceuticals

Aspartame is used in selected meal replacements, protein powders, chewable tablets and oral formulations where sweetening is required without adding sugar.

Actual use should comply with applicable food, pharmaceutical and labeling requirements in the destination market.

Sweetener Combinations

Aspartame is commonly combined with other high-intensity sweeteners to achieve the desired sweetness profile.

Sinoright also supplies Acesulfame-K (E950) separately, allowing customers to control their own formulation and blend ratio.

Storage

Keep sealed in the original packaging and store in a cool, dry place away from direct heat, sunlight and moisture.

Stability

Aspartame is sensitive to prolonged heat and may lose sweetness during high-temperature processing. It is generally more stable under mildly acidic conditions, but actual stability depends on formulation, pH, temperature and processing time.

For formulations involving prolonged heating or demanding storage conditions, product stability should be evaluated under the intended processing parameters.

IARC and JECFA Assessment

In 2023, IARC classified aspartame as Group 2B, "possibly carcinogenic to humans," based on limited evidence. IARC's classification is a hazard identification and does not by itself quantify the cancer risk associated with a specific level of exposure.

JECFA conducted a separate risk assessment and reaffirmed the acceptable daily intake (ADI) of 0-40 mg/kg body weight per day in 2023. WHO/JECFA noted that the available evidence did not provide sufficient reason to change the previously established ADI.

Regulatory conclusions and permitted uses may differ by jurisdiction and food category. Buyers should verify the requirements applicable to their target market before commercial use.

Phenylalanine / PKU Labeling

Aspartame contains phenylalanine.

For finished foods containing aspartame, applicable labeling requirements may include a statement regarding phenylalanine.

In the United States, the applicable regulation requires the statement:

"Phenylketonurics: Contains Phenylalanine."

In the European Union, Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 provides specific labeling wording for foods containing aspartame/aspartame-acesulfame salt, including:

"contains aspartame (a source of phenylalanine)"

or, where the sweetener is identified by its specific name in the ingredients list:

"contains a source of phenylalanine".
